‘ORDINARY PEOPLE DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS’

History

The Redland SES Unit was established back in the mid seventies not longer after the establishment of the Qld SES in 1976 and operated initially from a shed in the centre of Cleveland. In 1978 the Redland Shire Council had the foresight to build a purpose build SES Headquarters on Wellington St Cleveland which has and continues to serve the Units needs. In the early 1980’s an SES Group was established on North Stradbroke Island and a shed was built in Dunwich to house equipment based on the island. The Unit for many years had a core membership of between 30 and 50 people but in the last 10 years the membership has grown to a few hundred members as the community has seen more disasters and more people have stepped forward to assist in times of need. In 2012 2 new SES Groups were established with the formation of the Redland Bay SES Group and the Southern Moreton Bay Islands Group. In 2013 thanks to a collaboration of all levels of Government the North Stradbroke Island Community Education and Resilience Centre was opened as a new home for the SES Group on the North Stradbroke Island. In 2013 $ 50 000 of State Government Funding has been announced to build a new SES Operations Shed on Russell Island in support of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands SES Group. In 2014 the new SES Operations Shed on Russell Island connected to the Russell Island Rural Fire Service Station was offically opened for the Southern Moreton Bay Island SES Group. During 2014 SES Week the Redland City SES Unit was announced as the Regional Unit of the Year for the Brisbane Region and as the Regional Operation Unit of the for the Brisbane Region for Operation Blue Lake – North Stradbroke Island Wildfires.
